Ekman and Spirit Rock

June 18, 2006

Attended a workshop with Paul Ekman at Spirit Rock. Facinationg stuff. A great deal of work has focused on how our facial expressions convey are moods. Even if the facial expression only takes place for a millisecond. His talk focused on his meetings with the Dali Lama which were summarized in the book Destuctive Emotions and his thoughts about preventing anger. He provided some coaching on how to notice one's anger and train ourselves not to act on the impulse. That the emotion can subside over time if we realize that an emotion last for short period of time. Unlike a mood that last for hours or a temperment that can last for days, weeks and months. I find this facinating because I have been able to fight my 'angers' by noticing when they are about to build up and just walking around the block to let them subside. Other interesting comments: facial expressions can drive our emotions, meditation can activate certain types of our brain, and that some emotions can be constructive.
